Protoceratops was a small, plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 75 to 71 million years ago, primarily in what is now Mongolia. It was a member of the ceratopsian family, a group of horned dinosaurs that includes the more famous Triceratops, though Protoceratops was much smaller and lacked the large horns seen in its later relatives. Measuring about two metres in length and weighing around 180 kilograms, it had a stocky, quadrupedal body with strong limbs adapted for walking on all fours, though it may have been capable of rearing up on its hind legs to reach vegetation. Its most distinctive features were its large, parrot-like beak and the bony frill that extended from the back of its skull. The frill, though not as elaborate as those of later ceratopsians, likely served multiple purposes: it provided attachment points for jaw muscles, may have offered some protection for the neck, and possibly played a role in species recognition or display during
