The idea behind this 1 piece design for the quick connect challenge is to not add any manufacture to the brick and cavity. changing the Geometry of brick and cavity leads to additional machining if using the molding and injection molding process. Therefore a friction based solution has been developed, this using rubber and pressure to maintain the brick in its place. (the basic surface areas and forced applied are found in appendix "calculations.xlsx" a few considerations have been taken into account, the roughness of the injection molding and brick have when used with rubber, has a friction coefficient of 1. The cavity is considered to with hold the pressure and vacuum applied. The dilatation of materials is homogeneous and its coefficient is low. (lower than rubber). System: the system works as follows: when the cavity is put under pressure, the spaces between the blocks fill of air and apply a force to the rubber which transfers it to the cavity, using the force resulting from friction (which has a higher surface than normal orientated area of the brick and its extra surfaces which would tend to push out the brick.) when submitted to vacuum, the cavities fill with the vacuum and a leaver system goes into action, therefore the surface maintaining the brick from entering the cavity is above the vacuumed areas. If ever the vacuum seal is not efficient, as safety seal is positioned if the peace slips from its original position. dismounting. To dismount the system, it is quite simple, only apply a higher pressure until the brick pops out of position. (superior to 3 bars of pressure.) Kind regards. Thomas Barthram
