I recently received a couple of nice Icom IC-F3S VHF radios. I bought batteries packs off the internet, but I didn't have any of the charging accessories that normally come with the radios. This project prints a drop in charging base that allows the radio to be charged with an external NiMh charger (I use a Sirius Smart Charger Pro Series meant for charging transmitter packs for radio control air planes). The battery contacts were made from some scrap brass strips that came out of a 4 foot fluorescent tube socket. The scad source is included and can be easily modified for other radio sizes.
Note: The brass contact strips are connected directly to the battery cells when the radio is dropped in the charger pocket. If you have a messy bench, you may want to cover the exposed brass on the rear of the charging base. You will not get a shock ( approx 11V when charging) but if the base is pushed up against a conductive surface, the batteries have plenty of current available to cause some he
