The various city-states of the fringe realms may not be guided by royal blood and thus have no need for a royal retinue of loyal companions but that does not mean they ignore the value of having a hardened core of soldiery loyal to the state that they can count on when it comes to violence. The Republican Guards vary from city to city, however they all are the cream of the crop of their cities militia. Clad in plate with crested helms and armed with all manner of great weapon they are the anvil upon which the ambitions of petty kings are broken.
