This is a small, bent piece of metal, shaped kind of like a tiny hairpin or a looped paperclip. Its purpose is to hold another piece, like a bolt or pin, securely in place so it doesn’t slide out. One side of the metal goes through a hole in the bolt, and the other side bends around it to lock it in. It’s a very simple but clever way to keep things from falling apart
