Original project made with Autodesk Inventor 2014 as a Dynamic simulation, considering also the gravitation force, as an extension of my former project „Metronome (Reverted pendulum)” which was created in 2D. I added a third spring connection and a new joint at the bottom of the pendulum. This joint is a specific 3D spatial rotation with 3 degrees of freedom, but here we have the possibility to lock the third rotation - around the vertical axis. The locking is made with a set screw detailed to the end of the clip (and in pictures). If you think carefully about the situation you will understand why this locking is necessary. Do you? You can see that the pendulum describes a thin Lissajous curve placed on a sphere with the center in the bottom joint. As usual, you will find the .iam and .ipt files so, if you work with Inventor, you can download them to enter Environments / Dynamic simulation and to change the settings as you wish. As a result, you can test how the mechanism really works. The animation is made with the Dynamic simulation module - the only way to present compressing of springs in real-time. The spring animation cannot be passed to the Inventor studio module, like any other dynamic simulation. This is why you will find also the „Reverted pendulum (3D) with static springs” file, based on the same components plus the springs. Here the springs are calculated with the Design acceleration module in each position, but they are static and non-compressible. This assembly was used to make the rendered images. Enjoy!
