The ring model is a replica of the model described in Rosenfeld (1970), which was used to show the "form of central surface due to simultaneous growth and moderate rotation of garnet" (pg. 30).

Source: Rosenfeld, J. L. (1970). Rotated garnets in metamorphic rocks (Vol. 129). Geological Society of America. (https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/books/book/250/Rotated-Garnets-in-Metamorphic-Rocks).

The original ring model in the photo in the paper should still be at UCLA. It is made of wood. There is also a brass version with it. Dr. Rosenfeld told me that the machinist was not going to have it ready in time for the photo, so they had to use the wooden version. I'm assuming that the wooden version was already made. Maybe it was the prototype.

John Rosenfeld passed away at the age of 100 years on August 15, 2020. I always enjoyed the stories he would share about his experiences in geoscience. He was a huge influence, and I will forever be grateful for the advice and encouragement h
