Rugops was a medium-sized theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 95 million years ago, in what is now North Africa. Its name means “wrinkle face,” derived from the distinctive texture of its skull, which was covered in a network of pits and grooves. These features may have supported a scaly or keratinous covering, giving it a unique, almost armored appearance. Rugops belonged to the abelisaurid family, a group of predatory dinosaurs known for their short, blunt snouts and reduced forelimbs, similar to those of the more famous Carnotaurus. Measuring about six to eight meters in length, Rugops was not among the largest predators of its time, but it likely occupied an important niche in its ecosystem.
