Soviet Union luna_2 is the first man made object to reach the moon according to NASA time line they say it was a failure do to its crash into the moon and it did not reach orbit this is not exactly true the primary mission was to get to the moon and the second was to be able to track the satellite to that distance both of those mission goles where achieved so it was a success according to the developers it was tracked to the moon and crashed by the sea of tranquility

later luna missions was able to achieve orbit this is before the US maned missions
