In a warband, everyone’s a brother until The Bill comes due. The Scapegoat is a survival tactic as old as the first tavern brawl. It’s about making sure the universe's spite hits the expendable lad so the MF in charge can live to buy another pint. It sounds cruel, but that’s pragmatism in a world that’s trying to un-write you. I’ve seen a Scribe of Lies rewrite reality just enough so that a stray fireball targeted at him hit the camp follower instead. It’s a dirty trick, but as Saint Vincent says, a glorious failure is a finer tale than a boring death. Just make sure you aren't the one holding the goat. Or mule.
