Potting soil from the store is too coarse and lumpy for starting some seeds. Sifting the soil can greatly increase the success of germination because the roots are less likely to be blocked or otherwise hindered by large solid obstacles. Scoop dirt up with the sifter cup. Place it in the larger cup and cover with the lid. shake until the finer particles fall to the bottom
