Update 2025-12-06: I have decided to stop using these spacers. I used several thousands this season and they worked as intended: it was easy to get the plugs out and it stopped the roots from peeking out. However, this control became unwanted. Due to lack of shelf space, I placed my trays in garden beds and wanted the roots to explore outside, getting water and more nutrients than the tiny tray cell provided. It seems most plants don't mind some root disturbance during transplant. I had some Tomato, Pepper, and French Marigold seedlings where I accidentally ripped 90% of the roots: They recovered quickly and performed similarly to those with full roots. Therefore, the hassle of dealing with these spacers during transplanting is not worth the effort.
