Shade & Base Lantern

This small lantern is made by using the shade as a mould for the base.

The mould is 3D printed and then the base is cast inside it using fine concrete. When the concrete is dry the design of the mould allows the base to be popped out and separated from the shade.

The properties of the plastic give a great quality of light that shows off the layers from the 3D printing process. The heavy concrete acts as a beautiful and tactile base to the lantern and can be used without the shade if preferred.

The lantern comes from a process that I developed in my architecture degree at the Welsh School of Architecture (Cardiff University). The concept of the design was that it creates a different kind of relationship with physical things. By creating a printable file that had the information within it to become a lantern through a making process that is familiar to most, in this case casting in a mould, anyone could use the file and cast their own lantern relatively easily.
