This adapter connects a small shop-vac (pipe diameter is 32mm) to the axial cyclone dust separator. You don't need to use the filter from the original handheld vacuum, everything is 3D printed. The separator is an axial flow cyclone which uses an impeller to add swirl to the airflow thus flinging the heavy particles to the outside where it gets dumped into a collector. I suggest using the Fat Body version for better separation without the filter. This add on to a shop-vac allows you to get the heavy particles out right at the front end of the pipe. A shop-vac is a much larger vacuum that the original handheld version but has much larger capacity if you include the shop-vac. The debris collects in the collector which can be as large as you like or you can use the smallish printed collector from the original design.
