I wanted to hang the spool on the side of the printer, as I have more room there. Using the original spool holder works, but it's janky and it creates horrible amounts of friction with cardboard spools, and spools that have a nick or filament tail inside will hang up on the slot and jam.
This holder uses a wingnut and a felt or foam washer to provide a consistent amount of drag, independent of the spool weight or material. That should help reduce the risk of birdnesting that a freewheeling spindle would cause.
This design is based around a 5/16" plain-shank carriage bolt and a nylon locknut. An inch, plain-shank carriage bolt might be an odd thing to find, so there's an option in the SCAD file for a hex bolt instead. The size can obviously be adjusted as needed.
Included is an extended mount for the guide tube. It bolts on with one of the M6 panel bolts, though the original panel bolts won't be long enough.
Included are STL files for all parts. There are two differ
