This is a special tool designed to fit and to hopefully remove and install those large retainer rings on the bottom of a sink basket. This one fits the KEENEY Manufacturing Part # K5414, sold at LOWES Stores. This particular design uses a series of 6 notches instead of a hex nut. I am not a plumber, so I do not know if this is a "universal" design or not. I have not tried to remove a nut, but this will work great to install the new strainer basket. My RV had two of these strainer baskets and they are in a small space, so it was almost impossible to get any tool in that space that would allow the nut to be tightened. If you try to use this to remove old retainer nuts, you will likely want to use a stronger material and a denser infill.
