When a member will begin to lose stiffness and undergo some type of strain hardening or cracking if it exceeds its elastic limit, which also signifies that the overall stiffness of the structure or building is changing. In order to determine how much the material has cracked or softened the structure, you must first load it and check to see if it entered a nonlinear stage. We repeat the process and do the analysis if the loss in stiffness is severe and the outcomes or the energy balance do not converge. This cycle will repeat itself until the requisite precision is obtained. A nonlinear analysis hence requires more time than a linear analysis because of such losses in stiffness and its iterative nature
