Based on some topographical data of Everest, I made a scale model of the mountain. I then wrote a python script which analysed the original STL in order to apply some colour information. Assuming the model was entirely white to begin with, my script aimed to identify areas that should be grey to look like exposed rock. The script looked for two types of “rocky” surfaces, identified as any faces that:are below a certain threshold on the Z-axis, with an inclination relative to the XY plane lower than 20 degrees, orhave an inclination relative to the XY plane of greater than 60 degrees.I decided (artistically, not scientifically) that rock would be probably be visible below a certain height where the terrain is relatively flat, and on any surfaces that are too steep for snow to settle without sliding down. This script produced an OBJ file based on the orginal STL, with faces coloured according to that analysis. The result looks quite cool, with snowy peaks, some rocky lowlands and exposed
