I really liked the solderless photon board by mhson. Make sure you check that out. I added a cover that includes a window that lets you see the LED and access the buttons and an opening for the USB cord. I also added an embossed-like logo on the bottom. I had to increase the size of the board a bit from the original design.
The idea is that you stick wire in the side and the chip headers come down from the top and where they meet they squeeze together and are held tight by friction.
What I've found works best is to insert the chip (I use a Particle photon) and experiment with a wire size you can stick into the side that will fit snugly past the header from the chip and thus make contact. You can also try to put the wires in first, with the chip in the holes but not pressed down. When you press the chip down it should squeeze against the wires and hold them snug. When you get it right it holds very tight. When you don't they fall right out.
