This ring is supposed to slip onto SONY cameras with e-mount that do not feature a hot-shoe. Even though this hot-shoe is not connected to the camera, it can serve as mounting point for all kinds of hot-shoe compatible accessories - like the SmaTrig 2.1 multi-function trigger in my case. https://www.doc-diy.net/photo/smatrig2/smatrig2_doc_english.pdf
