The soroban (算盤?) is a Japanese abacus. Derived from suanpan, it was introduced to Japan in the 16th century.
On each row are five grains. The lower four have the value of units, while the upper one is equivalent to 5.

This design makes it easier for people with visual impairments to use this instrument.
