For years I wanted to print a spintop. But with the geared motor extruders this was not possible because the pointed tip while being printed would accumulate too much heat and melt away. With a geared motor you can't control the exact amount of extruded material which is just what you need to do when you want to slow down in the upper layers to give the plastic more time to cool down.
Now that we have stepper motor based extruders it's possible so I just HAD to create this object using OpenSCAD :)
The snap fit handle (needed to keep the lower part flat and printable) was inspired by the printed axis in the "Screwless Cube Gears" by emmett http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:10483
