One, mixing up sponges that are used for different things (I recently had to do dishes twice, because I was informed that I used the dog sponge the first time... good times). Second was to help keep things dry, clean, and organized. This is especially true for people with children in the house. They will know what scrubber to use for the task. One of main reason was to help the sponges (or anything that fits in the slots) stay dry and dry faster. I didn't want them to sit in a puddle of water and get smelly or moldy.
