Another useless, but fun project. Every time I am swamped with "real" work (medical, optical, robotics...) I need a small project to keep sane (?) Here is a small (3") terrestrial globe with stand. I used an 18th century world map to print the 12 gores (segments) for gluing on the sphere. Made out of boxwood, mahogany and brass. The 3" sphere is pine. A very nice program to convert a map to many form of projections is the free G.ProjectorWin. The projection to create the gores is sinusoidal, 12 gores. I am contemplating making a matched celestial globe using a 17th century sky map. I am using a Canon PIXMA PRO-10 printer with pigment ink. The printed gores need to be soaked in water before gluing. It is actually easier to make a big globe than a small one.
