Tertiary-butanol, or 2-methyl-2-propanol, is the simplest tertiary alcohol, with its central carbon atom bonded to three methyl groups and one hydroxyl group. Unlike its other butanol isomers, it is a solid at room temperature, melting at just above 25 °C (78 °F) into a colorless liquid with a camphor-like odor. Its bulky structure makes it a poor solvent for many applications but an excellent non-nucleophilic base in organic reactions. It is widely used as a solvent for chemical reactions, a denaturant for ethanol, and an ingredient in paint removers. A significant application is as a gasoline additive to prevent carburetor icing and increase octane rating.
