This is a tournament-size set of chessmen, designed using OpenSCAD. MS 3D Builder was used simply to clean up errors in the generated STL and convert the ASCII STL output of OpenSCAD to binary STL.
The king stands about 4" (10cm) tall. I wanted to have some originality in the design and styling of the pieces, but still have them be easily recongnizable and useful for actually playing a game of chess. Some set designs I've seen are rather enigmatic, if visually beautiful.
Two sets of files are available. The hollow pieces have an interior void to be filled with plaster or something to weight them; the solid pieces lack this void. There is a simple baseplate design also included to aid in filling the hollow pieces. If you opt for the solid pieces, there's no reason to print the baseplate.
The wooden board in the pictures is, of course, not 3D printed. The squares on it measure about 2 1/4" (57 mm) and this, or something close, is an appropiorate board size for these chess
