The United States flag is a symbol of the country’s freedom and history. It was first created in 1777, after the American colonies declared independence from Britain. The first flag had 13 stripes and 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies. Many people believe that a woman named Betsy Ross helped sew the first flag. As more states joined the country, more stars were added to the flag. Today, the flag has 50 stars for the 50 states and 13 stripes to remember the original colonies. The colors of the flag have meaning: red stands for courage, white stands for purity, and blue stands for justice. The flag is also called “Old Glory” or “The Stars and Stripes.” Americans show respect for the flag by flying it on holidays like Independence Day and by never letting it touch the ground.
