The creators of the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation designed the ENIAC as a military university project, which went online in 1946. Then they designed the EDVAC Eckert and Mauchly brought in a team, patented their work (patents that would later be invalidated). Their company was acquired by typewriter and other office equipment company Remington Rand, who also bought ERA in Minneapolis and built a new computer with everything they'd all learned about computers. The team introduced the UNIVAC I in 1951 for the United States Census Bureau. The 3d print won't likely weigh over 16,000 pounds or have 5,000 vacuum tubes in it. But then, it probably can't run 1,000 calculations per second and (with the help of some enterprising statisticians) predict the results of the 1952 election (even if the results come in a little later than expected because they were surprisingly accurate).
