A universal coupling, also known as a U-joint, is a mechanical joint that connects two rotating shafts whose axes are at an angle to each other. Its main purpose is to transmit power or rotary motion between these shafts, even when the angle between them changes. Function: To transmit torque between two shafts that are not collinear (i.e., their axes are inclined). Components: A typical universal joint consists of: Two Yokes (or Forks): One attached to each shaft. A Cross (or Spider): A central component with four arms (journals) that fit into bearings in the yokes. These arms are oriented at 90 degrees to each other. How it Works: As one shaft rotates, its yoke turns the cross. The cross then transmits this rotation to the other yoke, which in turn rotates the second shaft. The unique arrangement of the cross allows this power transmission to occur even when there is an angle between the shafts. Common Applications: Automotive Drive Shafts: Connecting the transmission to the differential in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Steering Linkages: Allowing the steering wheel to turn the wheels even though they are on different axes. Industrial Machinery: Connecting shafts in various types of equipment where misalignment might occur. Robotics: Used in robot arms and other mechanisms requiring flexible connections.
