Valeric acid, or pentanoic acid, is a straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid with the formula CH₃(CH₂)₃COOH. It is a colorless liquid with a very unpleasant, pungent odor. Its name is derived from the valerian plant (Valeriana officinalis), where it is found naturally and which has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. While the acid itself is known for its foul smell, its esters have pleasant, fruity odors. Consequently, the primary use of valeric acid is in the synthesis of these esters, which are then used as fragrance components in perfumes and cosmetics, and as fruity flavoring agents in foods.
