A Variable Air Volume (VAV) box is a precision airflow control device integral to advanced HVAC installations. Installed downstream of the primary air-handling unit, the VAV box dynamically adjusts volumetric airflow to maintain individual zone temperature setpoints—without altering supply air temperature. This capability ensures optimal comfort, energy efficiency, and zone-by-zone climate management in commercial and institutional environments. Core Functionality: Airflow Modulation: Continuously varies ducted air volume using modulating dampers driven by zone thermostats or building management systems (BMS). Constant Temperature Supply: Maintains a fixed supply-air temperature from the central AHU, simplifying system-wide thermal balancing. Reheat Integration (Optional): Incorporates electric or hot-water reheat coils to provide controlled warming when airflow reduction alone cannot meet low-load heating demands. Key Advantages: Enhanced Comfort Control: Delivers precise, zone-level temperature regulation, eliminating hot or cold spots. Energy Optimization: Reduces fan and chiller/heater runtime by matching airflow to actual load requirements, driving significant utility savings. Scalable Architecture: Modular design supports one-to-one zoning, VAV-to-CAV conversion, and integration with sophisticated BMS tools for demand-response strategies. Low Maintenance: Robust damper mechanisms and simple control logic minimize moving parts and streamline commissioning and upkeep. Typical Applications: Corporate offices with variable occupancy Hospital patient rooms and operating suites University lecture halls and laboratories High-end retail spaces and hotel guest rooms By marrying precise volumetric airflow control with constant-temperature supply, the VAV box delivers a balanced approach to occupant comfort and operational efficiency—making it an indispensable asset in any modern HVAC deployment. This was also manufactured for our semester project. Hence this was DFM.
