In this paper a genetic algorithm was used to optimize airfoils profiles. The authors found a design that outperforms symmetric NACA airfoils of similar thickness.

"Comparing the performance of the optimised airfoils with reference airfoils from the initial generation with similar thickness showed the improved efficiency of the newly designed airfoils. The optimised airfoils outperform the reference airfoils in terms of power coefficient, while they allow to decrease the optimal blade solidity for a given tip-speed ratio and pitch-angle range."
