A 12-week collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology and Year 9 students from Bialik College to make a more attractive and useable walking cane as part of the BrainSTEM Innovation Challenge.
The handle design allows the user to utilise both hands to get out of a chair; the ridge running along the handle allowed us to use glow-in-the-dark paint to help locate the cane at night time, and the hook comfortably latches onto the wrist for greater mobility.
We designed this not only to achieve the above, but also to be fashionable; we referenced heritage aspects, such as automotive design from the 60's, vintage ski poles, as well as looking at different colour trends.
The handle is sized to accommodate a 25mm diameter dowel as a shaft, cut to the appropriate size (there are many sizing guides online that can indicate the correct dimensions) and capped with a 25mm diameter rubber stopper.
