Water is, by essence, life. Water is also, by essence, death. from a single drip to a colossal crashing wave, water is everything and nothing. Water lacks care consciousness, it does not care about anything around it, often taking everything along with it, if given enough time. This leaves total destruction in its wake, but also the foundation of rebirth.
The mages of old have learned to harness water, by giving it what it lacks, consciousness. It cannot be truly controlled, but can be directed. When facing the overwhelming, crushing fathoms of living water, not much can be done.
