The first dinosaur fossil formally identified and named was Megalosaurus, described by English naturalist William Buckland in 1824. While a bone fragment was illustrated earlier in 1677 by Robert Plot, it was not recognized as belonging to a dinosaur at the time. Megalosaurus's discovery sparked further interest in prehistoric reptiles and led to the recognition of other similar fossils, like Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus. Eventually, Richard Owen coined the term "Dinosauria" in 1842 to group these reptiles together. Thought Experiment Let us suppose for a moment that Robert Plot did figure out, back in 1677 already, that he was in fact examining a dinosaur bone.
