Summary
My living room is very bright - and as such the Wii (or Wii on Wii-U) is unusable with any sunny days.

The following solution works great for me.

You take all responsibility for confirming that the loads, material selection, noise, etc are appropriate for your area.

Mouser:
Qty 1 – 78-TLUR4400 Vishay 630nm 20mA 2V LED 3mm Red Diffused due to discontinuation
Qty 8 – 782-TSAL6100 – Vishay 940nm 10* 100mA 1.35V LED 5.8MM TSAL6100 Infrared Emitters 940nm, T-1.75 170mW/sr, +/-10deg.
Qty 1 – 279-ROX2SJ150R 150 Ohm 2 watt (physically smaller than the 5 watt 286-150-RC)
Qty 4 – 603-RSF100JB-73-27R - 27 Ohm metal oxide resistor
Qty 1 – 48ASSP3S1M2RBT (on / off / on) SPDT due to discontinuation

Amazon:
Qty 1 – Micro-USB type B breakout board (DIP Adapter pinboard)

Note on LEDs – the longer leg is positive / the shorter leg w/ flat edge on the outer casing is negative

Coat all exposed metals with heat shrink and/or lacquer
