This is one of those things that has almost laser-specific applicability, but I thought I'd upload it anyway.
I have a small windsock that is designed to mount on a 7/16" metal rod. The mount that came with it has a very nice welded plate for mounting on the side of something. I didn't want to cut that up in case I decide to do that in the future.
I plan to mount it on a 1 1/2" PVC pipe mast that I can attach to a trailer.
The fitting with the "nut" on one end screws onto a 3/8" threaded rod an provides a low-friction surface for the windsock frame to pivot on. The nut ends help with threading the adapters onto the rod, and keep the windsock from coming off.
The other piece is inserted into the end of the PVC pipe and has a tight-fitting socket for the 3/8" threaded rod.
The threads a printed into the part. I chase them with a 3/8-16 tapered tap about 14mm into the nut end to finish forming and clean them.
The specific windsock I have is from *Huffy's Airport Windsoc
