Put under the knife fully closed, then screw the top portion out until it barely touches your knife, a rubber stop is optional. PS: Clamp your knife slightly loser as the sharpener tends to hold each side at a different angel when rotating, this way the knife can be nudged upwards on the side that's closer, and if it's further away you can push it up further.
