For one of my projects, I needed a custom spring that was not available anywhere and so I sought out to design one 3d printable.
Initially, without the pillars, the first inch of the spring printed out beautifully with the quality deteriorating the higher up the spring got. I saw that each time the nozzle tried to print up higher, the nozzle would cause the spring to bounce back and fourth, causing significant quality loss.
I got around this by adding the 6 .3in pillars to the spring. These pillars add more rigidity to the spring, allowing for the nozzle to lay down layers up higher without making the spring rock back and fourth. The pillars are easily removed with wire cutters and the spring was printed in PETG.
