Each tower houses a large hooded lantern in its upper tier, lit at dusk by the keeper on duty. The light isn’t meant to shine far, only to glow through fog and low clouds so anyone crossing the fields can keep their bearings. Most quar know the towers well. They’re steady landmarks, useful in bad weather and long marches, and a welcome sight when the road has gone on a bit too long. A lit beacon means you’re still on the right path and not wandering into a ditch or the wrong valley entirely.
