He’d enlisted to fight the demons. He’d seen the refugees pouring in from the villages and he’d known that was the right thing to do. Even now, he’d fight a demon with nothing but a rock if he had to, with his bare hands, with his teeth. The trenches though, this wasn’t fighting. Stinking of death and offal. The screams of the wounded abandoned in no man’s land haunting every moment of the day and night. The rats nibbling on you every time you finally managed to sleep. All so the idiot son of some lord or another could add another star to his shoulder. The last time his unit had rotated, he’d just hopped off the transport. Three glorious days of freedom. He hadn’t seen a rat or a corpse the whole time. He’d been caught of course, labeled a “deserter,” sent back to the exact same trench he’d been in days before, only this time in chains, and without shoes.
