The Atomium in Brussels, Belgium, is a distinctive architectural marvel that embodies the spirit of mid-20th-century modernism. Designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak, it was constructed for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58).The Atomium consists of nine interconnected stainless steel spheres, each representing an atom in the cubic crystal structure of iron, magnified 165 billion times. These spheres are connected by tubular escalators, forming the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. The structure stands at a height of 102 meters (335 feet) and offers panoramic views of Brussels from its highest sphere. The Atomium symbolizes both scientific progress and the optimistic outlook of the post-war era, serving as an enduring icon of Brussels and a testament to human ingenuity in architecture and engineering.
