This model demonstrates 4 major components of the cell membrane: proteins, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and the phospholipid bilayer. Its simple structure makes it the perfect learning tool for a range of ages. I made this in 10th grade biology class as a way to demonstrate the 4 components and how they work.

Printing:

I would only print 1 at a time (or 2 halves) due to the long print time. Any more on the plate and the plastic will start warping. I printed the smaller pieces separate from the main body as well.

I 'cut' the model in half in Autodesk and printed as two sections. This way it had a flat surface that was the 'bottom' when it printed. When both were finished I used fast drying gorilla glue to fasten them back together. I also used gorilla glue to fasten the individual pieces on it how I liked. This gave it a smoother finish because I didn't have to add any supports.
