I made a cheap version of the Chip-E, I made this robot, because I think Chip-E is a really great platform to learn about informatics and robotics, but not everyone can afford Chip-E.
The original Chip-E costs 189.95 $, my version should cost you about 10-15$, it depends on how many of the other parts you already have.

Parts needed:

6x 9g Servo 6,6$
1x Ir-receiver 0,11$
1x Arduino promini 1,26$
Some stripboard 1$

Other parts needed:

an old ir-remote
some rubberbands
3D-Printed parts
some foam rubber
an old usb cable
crimp connectors

My robot is not the best robot out there and it´s not the most beautyful one, but it walks and it smiles.
