This is a 3D printed model of a 3D rendering from a image stack of a confocal laser scanning microscope. The nucleus is cut in half so you can look inside the nucleus. The DNA is stained with Hoechst a fluorescent blue dye that is exited with UV light. The compact parts you see are the densely compact silent genes. The open parts contain the active genes. This is typical the nucleus of a cultured cell, cells in a organism are rounder.
