I got tired of using 3d printed pegs for holding the material in place in my glowforge and decided to design an alternate solution. This design relies on large bar magnets to hold the edges of the material down. It will only work for laser cutters that have a metal base (such as the crumb tray in the Glowforge). It seems to work very well, even for slightly warped material so I’ve decided to share the design with my fellow makers.
Included are the stl and step files for the magnet holder, as well as the Fusion 360 archive. This is a fully parametric design, so feel free to adjust it to suit your needs.
The part is designed for 60 x 10 x 5 mm magnets. I’ve got mine from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QWMHGHZ). Assembly is simple – Just push the magnets in to the 3d printed part. It should be a snug fit, but still fairly easy to push.
As far as raw material for the laser cutter goes – I’ve designed the part to be able to hold down 1/8” (3.2mm) and 1/16” (1.6mm) ma
