Release the arms by undoing the knob anti clockwise until the arms move freely. Either pull or push the caliper arms until they touch both sides of whatever you are measuring, then tighten the knob turning it clockwise to lock the caliper arms in place. Then you just need to measure the distance between the tips of the two locked arms. Then undo the knob by turning it anti-clockwise to releas
