In the Miata NC, when the clutch pedal assembly is removed, the CPP (clutch pedal position) switch has a tendency to break. In fact, in the factory service manual, it's marked as a part to be replaced upon every removal/installation of the clutch pedal (note the R marking next to it - No. 2 in the diagram):

It looks to me like the snap-in-place enclosure (the brown part) of the switch fractures during removal (though it might be just me and my luck). Once that happens, the force exerted by the clutch pedal bouncing back is enough to open the enclosure - causing the rod part of the switch to move off axis and get stuck. At that point, the switch no longer moves when the clutch is depressed, and the CPP signal is stuck on Off - as far as the ECU is concerned, the clutch is never depressed.
