I made a small knife for my friend. The dowel takes quite a bit of effort to get in, but once in you do not need any kind of adhesive or attatchment. Have patience when putting it in (seriously). Make sure you have support blockers on the holes for the handle and guard, and support enforcers for the tang. For the guard (especially for multicolor), flip it on its side so that the hole is facing up. Turn it to “print by object” rather than layer to avoid excessive waste.
