This is for my Printer Chamber Project, but could apply to other homemade systems. It uses Extruded Aluminum T-Slots and a metal rod to hold spools above the printer. (http://davidkessner.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/3-d-printer-chamber/)
A huge feature of this holder is that the rod is latched firmly in place, and won't come loose even with the most terrible of spool tangles. Yet, it is super quick and easy to remove and replace the rod when you want to change spools.
The 0.75 inch diameter rod can support any spool that I've seen or used, including the giant 5 pound things from Ultimaker.com.
Solidworks files are included for download.
